Chess Totem Pole in Bakersfield California
I love making sculptures with wood. Back when I was managing a motel PG&E said they had to cut down the palm tree out front. I talked them into just cutting off the top so that I could carve a Totem pole. the process took about a year. First, I did a rough carving and drilled holes for draining the sap. I let the tree dry out all summer before I continued.
After the tree was dry and I poured sealant in the roots I began carving. I started with a chainsaw and a plain. then I did the fine work with a chisel and coated it with three coats of polyurethane.
Sadly, the totem pole no longer stands today.
